Benzene is a colourless, clear liquid, a non-methane hydrocarbon.

Almost all benzene in the atmosphere comes from petrol-fuelled vehicles. Of course levels of benzene are higher in urban areas than rural areas. Benzene concentrations are highest along urban roadsides. Particularly outside schools.

Healthy it ain't. Benzene is a carcinogen. It is particularly associated with leukemia.

It is readily absorbed into our bodies by breathing and accumulates in the body in fatty tissue.

Cycling produces no benzene. Cycling also helps reduce the amount of fatty tissue so you have less available to accumulate car drivers benzene emissions.
